Monday, Wayside Waifs' FEMA certified Animal Rescue and Response Team deployed to a small animal shelter in rural southeast Missouri to help 13 adult dogs and one puppy.
When Wayside's Rescue Team arrived, they found the animals living in a cold, make-shift shelter. For most of the dogs, this shelter is all they ever knew as they patiently waited for the past two years for a forever home.
The dogs were timid and fearful as the team carried them away from the make-shift shelter. But once they arrived at Wayside, the animals pranced right out of the rescue trailer and onto our campus where they received medical care, food, a warm bed and something they had never seen before, toys!
"We drove nearly 400 miles to rescue these dogs," said Tyler Petty of Wayside's Animal Rescue and Response Team. "The 15 hour round-trip was extremely long and challenging, but because of our strong teamwork, we were able to successfully help these dogs."
After further evaluation, our veterinarians discovered nearly all of the dogs have intestinal parasites and fleas. Most needed spay/neuter surgeries and a few will require dental work. The dogs also have wounds and scars on their noses from trying to push through their wire kennels.
